Normally you wouldn’t think Brooks Koepka would be playing in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. You also wound’t think that Koepka hasn’t had a top 10 finish in over four months either. Well, in this case, both are true and Brooksy is looking for any opportunity to help out his game.

“I’m not getting any better sitting at home,” Koepka said of his recent struggles. Part of those struggles have also been due to a lingering wrist injury suffered at The Tour Championship in early September. He withdrew from the third round at East Lake to try to get healthy enough to play in the Ryder Cup. Obviously we know how that went, he went 2-2 in the United State’s domination of Europe.

Now Brooks feels his wrist is completely healthy and just wants to re-find his consistency.

“I’ve been grinding man. You go through periods where you jut feel like you’ve got no control of the clubhead or you don’t know exactly where your swing is and what you’re doing. It’s just frustrating.” Koepka said of the current state of his game.

I think we can all relate to him on that front. Anybody that plays regularly knows exactly what he’s talking about. We’ve all gone through stretches where we’re just off and you look at a bunch of things to try and figure out how to get to playing good golf again.

Koepka has had a very unspectacular start to his 2022 season. A T67 at the Shriners and a T38 at The CJ Cup. Las Vegas was not kind to him and we’re not really used to seeing Brooks that far down the leaderboard this much.

“I’ve been playing so bad for so long, so I’m just trying to play my way out of this thing and figure it out. You know, hopefully we come out the other side soon,” Koepka said.

The result this week doesn’t really matter all that much for Koepka. He’d much rather find something in his swing that he didn’t have over the prior months. If he misses the cut to find that something, then so be it.

“I’ve left tournaments with a missed cut and found something that one shot on the 17th hole. That’s all you’re looking for. That one feeling and you almost seem like you’re on your way and just going on the right track.” Koepka said.

Perhaps going off the Mexico for this week’s event will prove useful to him. Although he’s missed the cut both times he’s played at Mayakoba, the result will be irrelevant if Brooks can get back to playing how we all know and expect that can.
