2022 PGA Championship: Expert Picks and Predictions For Southern Hills
Southern Hills welcomes the World’s best for the 2022 PGA Championship and though there has been plenty of drama leading into the year’s second Major with the LIV Golf Series, Phil Mickelson, and Sergio Garcia all making headlines in the build-up to one of the biggest events on the golfing calendar, it is at last, finally time for the 104th playing of the PGA Championship.
Tiger Woods is set to play for a second time this year, and Scottie Scheffler looks to add the second leg this week of what would not only be progress towards a career Grand Slam but a potential Grand Slam in the same year. Then there is Jordan Spieth, who has every opportunity of accomplishing his own career Grand Slam this week with just one more victory.
It is all set up to be an enthralling week of action, so without further ado here is who our staff are selecting to lift the Wanamaker Trophy in 2022.
Expert Picks and Predictions for the 104th PGA Championship
Scottie Scheffler
Opinion as to who will claim the year’s second Major at Southern Hills come Sunday is split amongst our experts this week. Scottie Scheffler has somewhat surprisingly garnered just one pick to win this week.
Mike Randleman: “My pick is Scottie Scheffler. He’s been the best player by miles in 2022 and he deserves to be the pick to win until he’s unseated in a big event.”
Max Homa
Hans Geevers: “Since the beginning of January, Max Homa has played eight tournaments on the PGA Tour. In those eight events just mentioned, Homa has accumulated an impressive six top 17 finishes, including a win at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship two weeks ago.”
Jordan Spieth
Christian Espinoza: “With Scottie Scheffler playing such good golf, it is difficult to pick anyone else from the field. However, I am going against the odds and picking Jordan Spieth. He is currently ranked 17th in strokes gained tee-to-green through his last 20 rounds. If he’s able to take advantage of the renovated Southern Hills with his patented touch and avoid little mistakes on the green, look for Spieth to (finally) complete his career Grand Slam.”
Kathlene Bissell: “It’s his last best chance playing on Bermuda for several years.”
Joaquin Niemann
Stephen Nixon: “Joaquin Niemann is my pick to win. This course is long and it requires you to hit a towering straight ball. There’s nobody better on Tour than him, plus his win at Riveria this year showed me that he can win a big tourney.”
Will Zalatoris
Bill Felber: “I feel like we are in line for another first-time winner. Zalatoris was top 10 in the PGA last year, and he’s been really good in every tournament except one since the Match Play. This is the week he really makes a name for himself.”
Rory McIlroy
Josh Chandler: “It is hard to believe that it has been eight years now since Rory McIlroy last won a Major. That drought ends this week. Each of the last three Major Champions had recorded two top 10 finishes in their previous two appearances at Major’s before their win, and while McIlroy doesn’t quite fall into that category he comes awfully close with finishes of 2nd, 46th, and 7th in his last three Major starts. The Northern Irishman is playing fantastic golf coming into this week with the aforementioned 2nd place and a 5th place finish in his last two starts. He claims his third PGA Championship this week.”
Dustin Johnson
Sean McCann: “DJ always seems to show up on the big stage, and he’ll carry that confidence into this week after his impressive T-12 finish at the Masters & T-9 finish at the PLAYERS Championship. When Johnson gets hot, no one on Tour can match his power.”
Viktor Hovland
Matt Hupfer: “Approach is the key to success this week and Hovland is the best iron player on tour over the last 36 rounds. Hovland will be familiar with the windy conditions this week, as he lives just an hour away from the course. In two of the most difficult scoring tournaments this year he finished 2nd at the API and 9th at the Players.”
