The PGA Tour is set for its seventh (and penultimate) Signature Event of the season, as Jack Nicklaus' famed Memorial Tournament returns to its traditional spot on the schedule after being bumped back a week last year.
With just two weeks to go before the U.S. Open, several players in the 72-man field will be getting their final tournament reps in before heading to Oakmont and, as always, will face a tough test at Muirfield Village.
One of the big stories of the week, however, revolves around someone not in the field, that being Rory McIlroy, who has now opted out of three Signature Events this season after also skipping the season-opening Sentry and the RBC Heritage following his triumph at The Masters. Rory will get his final U.S. Open tune-up next week at the RBC Canadian Open.
Even with McIlroy's absence, the Memorial, as usual, will still feature a star-studded field, which is headlined by defending champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who's been in the top three at Muirfield in each of his last three appearances here, finishing solo third in both 2021 and 2023 before taking the title a season ago.
Following back-to-back victories at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson and the PGA Championship, Scheffler tied for fourth this past week at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial and comes into the Memorial as the overwhelming betting favorite at +280.
Just how overwhelming are we talking? Well, the man who finished second to Scheffler last year, world No. 4 Collin Morikawa, and world No. 3 Xander Schauffele, who owns six top-25 finishes at the Memorial, including a T8 a year ago, are tied for the second-shortest odds at +1600.
That's quite the considerable gap, wouldn't you say?
Justin Thomas sits in fourth at +1800, while Patrick Cantlay, who won this event in 2019 and 2021, rounds out the top five at +2200.
