Obviously one of the big favorites coming into the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, where he's won four times throughout his illustrious career, Rory McIlroy didn't get off to a great start on Thursday.
Hitting just four of 14 fairways and struggling with the putter, the newest member of the career Grand Slam club opened the second major of the season with a 3-over round of 74, his worst score in Charlotte in seven years, putting him in a tie for 98th after 18 holes.
As such, Rory obviously needed a solid second round just to make the weekend, and he was cruising along just fine on Friday afternoon, firing a 3-under 32 on the opening nine to get back to even for the week.
And with a birdie at the par-5 10th after making the turn, McIlroy got back into red numbers, thus giving himself a little cushion as the cut line bounced back and forth between 1-over and 2-over as the afternoon progressed.
But just as things went at The Masters last month, Rory had everyone on the edge of their seat as he went on a wild ride over his final eight holes.
After going back in the black with bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12, he got back in the red with birdies at 14 and 15. Following a par at the 16th, where he made a double bogey on Thursday, McIlroy bogeyed the par-3 17th to drop back to even.
Again struggling with the driver, Rory went way left off the tee at the par-4 18th, his ball ultimately hitting the top of the grandstand before bouncing back down toward the water hazard.
Despite his ball somehow staying dry, the world No. 2 was still put in a position where he could've easily made another double, which would've ended his week. But he was able to manage a bogey, making the cut on the number at 1-over.
However, despite sitting in a tie for 62nd at the midway point and trailing leader Jhonattan Vegas by nine shots heading into Round 3, McIlroy is still getting the ninth-shortest odds to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy at +3500.
2025 PGA Championship betting odds heading into Round 3
Heading into what should be a wild Saturday at Quail Hollow, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who's tied for fifth at 5-under, remains the favorite to win at +210.
Bryson DeChambeau, who will enter Moving Day five shots back of the lead at 3-under, sits in second at +850. Vegas finally enters the conversation in the third slot at +1200, which are the same odds being given to Matt Fitzpatrick and Si Woo Kim, who are part of a three-way tie for second at 6-under. The third member of that trio, Matthieu Pavon, is getting the same +3500 odds as McIlroy.
