Do not sleep on this red-hot Dark Horse candidate at The Open Championship
The Open Championship begins this Thursday at Royal Troon. While Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are among the favorites to win, Adam Scott is a great Dark Horse pick coming off of a great week at the Scottish Open.
Don't sleep on Adam Scott at The Open Championship
Last week, Adam Scott looked like the man to beat at the Scottish Open coming down the back nine. He made some key birdies to take the lead and would have won if not for the electric finish by Robert MacIntyre.
It would not be surprising at all to see Adam Scott build upon this momentum at the Open. He has confidence knowing that he is capable of winning and that is a great boon right before a major.
Scott has not had a phenomenal 2024 by any stretch. His runner-up finish at the Scottish Open was only his 2nd top-10 of the year, the other coming at the WM Phoenix Open.
He has not been terrible, either. He has been his steady, consistent, under-the-radar self collecting 7 top-25s in 13 starts and only missing two cuts.
Back at Royal Troon in 2016, Scott finished at 5-over for the event in a tie for 43rd. This does not inspire a ton of confidence for this week, but it is fair to assume that Scott comes into the championship in better form than he did back in 2016.
We know that Scott has had his share of heartbreak at the Open. Back in 2012, he had a 4-stroke lead entering the final round but bogeyed his last 4 holes to lose by a stroke to Ernie Els.
It was a bitter defeat for the Australian to swallow, although he overcame that heartbreak to win the 2013 Masters. Finally, it may be time for Scott to redeem himself at the Open. We know that he probably should have multiple major titles at this point in his career, but he can finally become a multi-major champion this week.
He will not come into the event with all of the eyes on him like the top players in the world, but that could work to his benefit as he flies under the radar to get his hands on the Claret Jug.
