Rory McIlroy passes Phil Mickelson for 2nd on all-time PGA Tour money list

Despite making a pair of bogeys during Monday morning's three-hole aggregate playoff with J.J. Spaun, Rory McIlroy cruised to victory at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, thus collecting his second Players Championship title.

After taking a one-shot lead with a birdie at the par-5 16th, the world's second-ranked player then found the putting surface at the famed par-3 17th, hitting what he called a "three-quarter, three-quarter" 9-iron into the wind to put the pressure on Spaun, who hit his tee shot into the water.

While McIlroy ultimately three-putted for bogey, Spaun carded a triple-bogey six, and that was all she wrote, as Rory took a three-shot lead into the 18th. And despite a second straight bogey after finding the right rough off the tee, the four-time major winner captured the 28th PGA Tour victory of his career.

And in doing so, Rory made all sorts of history.

For starters, he's now the only European player to win The Players Championship on multiple occasions and is also just the eighth player overall to take two titles at TPC Sawgrass.

In addition, McIlroy is now just the fourth player ever to win multiple Players Championship titles and multiple major championships, joining an elite club that also features Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Scottie Scheffler.

Rory is also now tied with Leo Diegel and Paul Runyan for 20th on the all-time PGA Tour wins list. And with one more win, he'll tie Harry Cooper for the most PGA Tour victories by a European player.

So, it was certainly a special St. Patrick's Day victory for the Northern Irishman.

But even beyond all that, in collecting the largest first-place paycheck in golf, McIlroy has now moved into second place on the all-time PGA Tour money list.

With his victory at The Players, McIlroy collected the $4.5 million winner's share of the $25 million total purse at TPC Sawgrass, thus bringing his career on-course earnings on the PGA Tour to $99,709,062.

As such, Rory has surpassed Phil Mickelson for second place and now trails only Tiger, who sits in the top spot at $120,999,166.

It should be noted that given the situation with the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, players in the Saudi-backed series aren't currently included on the official list. But that doesn't change the fact that Mickelson has earned $96,685,635 in 666 starts on the PGA Tour.

Here's how the top 10 shakes out following McIlroy's victory at The Players.
