In 2024, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler became the first player ever to win The Players Championship in back-to-back years, shooting 67-69-68-64 to finish at 20-under for the week, thus earning a one-shot win over the trio of Wyndham Clark, Xander Schauffele, and Brian Harman.
Had Scheffler's pretty performance on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass come 30 years earlier, however, he would've only tied for second.
And while we can't really call it a distant second, he still would have finished four strokes behind, as Greg Norman made easy work of Pete Dye's design in a wire-to-wire win, finishing at 24-under for the week to capture the 14th of his 20 PGA Tour titles.
Greg Norman shot 24-under to win the 1994 Players Championship
Roughly six weeks ahead of the 1994 edition of The Players Championship, Norman had become the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking for the seventh time, taking the top spot from longtime rival Nick Faldo after earning a victory at the European Tour's Johnnie Walker Classic.
And Norman wasted no time proving he was the best player on the planet in his opening round at The Players.
Taking advantage of ideal weather conditions at TPC Sawgrass, the Aussie fired a 9-under 63, matching what was then the lowest round ever recorded on the Stadium Course, which was first set by Fred Couples two years earlier.
Matched by seven others over the years, the record of 63 finally fell in 2023 when Tom Hoge shot a 10-under 62, which Justin Thomas matched two years later.
The records kept coming for Norman, as a second-round 67 gave him the lowest 36-hole score in tournament history at 14-under. Yet another 5-under 67 in the third round gave him the 54-hole record at 19-under.
What shouldn't be forgotten about that week is the stellar play of Fuzzy Zoeller, who did everything in his power to keep up with the world's top-ranked player, shooting 66-67-68 over his first three rounds to enter the final 18 holes in second place at 15-under.
But unlike what went down two years later at The Masters, where Norman famously blew a six-shot lead in the final round to lose to Faldo, "The Shark" didn't let up on Sunday at Sawgrass, shooting a third consecutive 67 to set a new scoring record at The Players Championship at 24-under.
Zoeller also shot 67 but had to settle for second at 20-under.
