Although he didn’t win a ton of events, Bobby Jones crushed it in major tournaments. It isn’t often that you find a player who won more Majors than he did normal PGA Tour events. Jones was a different situation though, as he never actually was a “professional” golfer.
Competing solely as an Amateur, Jones only played in tournaments for about a decade. He dominated the competition from the early 1920s, all the way through 1930. Arguably, that was when his greatest accomplishment occurred.
In 1930, Jones won the Amateur Championship. He followed it up with a win at the Open Championship. He wasn’t done yet, as he would then win the U.S. Open. He rounded it out with a win at the U.S. Amateur. This led him to be the first player to win the Grand Slam, taking home each major that year.
That would be the last major Jones would win, finishing with 13 in total. At the young age of 28, he decided to walk away from the game. He was a lawyer by profession, and golf was just something he did part-time, as evidenced by his amateur status throughout his career.
Jones did almost as much once he retired as he did while he was playing. He helped to design Augusta National, and was also a large part of setting up the Masters tournament. Being a part of the team to design Augusta and the most important tournament in all of golf is pretty impressive.
Funny enough, Jones actually did give up his amateur status once he retired. He was making so much money from his golf instruction videos, that he gave it up in order to cash in on the products that he was making.
When all is said and done, Bobby Jones easily takes the cake as the best to come from Georgia Golf. It shouldn’t be too big of a surprise for one of the best to ever do it.
