The Ryder Cup competition between Europe and the United States begins this week at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The top 12 players from each side will meet with the winner taking home one of the most coveted trophies in golf.

As the teams prepare for competition, we will be doing the same by previewing the players in this year’s event. Today, we look at Team Europe’s Paul Casey.

More from Pro Golf Now

Ryder Cup experience – This will be Casey’s fifth Ryder Cup overall. He played for the European side in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2018 and has compiled a 4-3-5 record overall. He is 2-1-3 in four ball, 1-1-0 in foursomes and 1-1-2 in singles matches.

Worldwide experience – Casey has won 15 times on the European Tour in his career and three times on the PGA Tour. His most recent win came in January of 2021 when he claimed the title at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. In the states, he last won at the Valspar Championship in 2019.

What to expect – Casey has seen a bit of a resurgence of his career lately. Frankly, he’s played as well over the last couple of years as he ever has. Whether that translates into success at the Ryder Cup remains to be seen.

Casey is not cut from the same cloth as Ian Poulter or Sergio Garcia. He’s not going to be fiery or show a ton of emotion. That’s just not him. But his calm demeanor in an event like this could prove to be an asset, especially with the European team being away from home.

Look for captain Padraig Harrington to use Casey strategically this week. Perhaps there is a partnership on the European side with Casey and someone else that we do not know about yet. If Harrington can find that right mix, that would be the best possible scenario for the Euros and, specifically, for Casey.
