The Ryder Cup competition between Europe and the United States begins this week at Whistling Straits Golf Course in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The top 12 players from each side will meet with the winner taking home one of the most coveted trophies in golf.
As the teams prepare for competition, we will be doing the same by previewing the players in this year’s event. Today, we look at Team USA’s Dustin Johnson.

Ryder Cup experience – Johnson will be making his fifth Ryder Cup appearance this week. He has a 7-9-0 record overall, including a 3-5-0 mark in four-ball, a 1-3-0 mark in foursomes and a 3-1-0 record in singles.
Worldwide experience – DJ has won 24 times on the PGA Tour, including the 2016 U.S. Open and the 2020 Masters. He’s a lock for the World Golf Hall of Fame and a player who was ranked number one in the world for nearly three years. He probably has the best credentials of any player in the event this week.
What to expect – It’s hard to say what to expect from Johnson. He has never found that perfect Ryder Cup partner with whom he meshed (he and Matt Kuchar did well, but Kuchar is not here this week). However, he has done very well on Sunday in the singles matches.
Look, DJ is as good as almost anyone on site this week. He’s not as hot as Jon Rahm or Patrick Cantlay at the moment but make no mistake – if DJ is hot, he can beat anyone.
If the Americans are to win this week, they need significant contributions from Johnson. He needs to be more like the number one player in the world and less like the guy he was for most of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. Whether he has that in him or not remains to be seen. And, if he does, can captain Steve Stricker bring it out in him? We shall see.
