Ryder Cup experience – This will be Cantlay’s first appearance in the Ryder Cup. He was able to go 3-2-0 in the 2019 Presidents Cup, where he and partner Xander Schauffele went 2-2-0 before Cantlay beat Joaquin Niemann in the singles match.
Worldwide experience – Cantlay is coming off an impressive performance in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He won the postseason and the $15 million prize that comes with it. Cantlay, who had four of his six PGA Tour wins this season, was voted the 2020-21 PGA Tour Player of the Year.
What to expect – Luckily for the Americans, one of the hottest golfers in the world will be on their side. Cantlay’s run through the FedEx Cup playoffs was quite impressive. If he can keep that up, this could be a very big week for both he and the Americans.
Captain Steve Stricker is going to need one of the newcomers, if not more than one, step up this week. The most likely candidates seem to be Schauffele and Cantlay. This could be the week that vaults them to another status in the U.S.
Cantlay is a solid player who is sneaky long, accurate with his irons and a clutch putter. He’s also not afraid of a big situation, which is what he’s facing this week.
If Cantlay can keep his calm and play his game this week, he should be able to make a big contribution to the U.S. side.
